is an old/antique/vintage copper 'double boiler' from the estate of an elder relative; it was recently fully refurbished to the shiny copper at a professional metal finisher (the Bellows Shoppe in Wilmette , IL ). Those little speckles on the close-ups are dust, sorry! The front side has a maker's mark called " Cream City " embossed on the front (I'm told " Cream City " is a nickname for Milwaukee Wisconsin - any one with more information, it is welcome). Note this model has the 'hook-like' undersides on the handle connections so that people use poles to lift or carry the tub of nearly-boiling water. The handles are all 3 alike (pot & lid), made of a single piece of turned wood, and attached by a different metal alloy that is non-ferrous. The lid has an old repair with welding as shown; the repair was done a very long time ago and is now extra-stable ('waste not want not' being the farmer's motto). It appears to me that the lid handle was reattached to new sheet copper, which was interspersed between the original metal layers of the lid, and then all was welded in on the topside & underside. In terms of strength & function, top-notch soldering job, a very nice repair! According to my elder relatives, these 'double boilers' were used on cast iron stoves before the era of washing machines. They would be placed on the top of the stove crossing between both burners; the water would be brought to just under a rolling boil to 200 degrees, then lifted outside to do the actual laundry work (on Mondays, of course!). Copper was the metal of choice as wouldn't rust & had superior heat conductivity. The 'double-boilers' were also used for many other tasks, including canning, hauling water, cooking large batches of food, and even bathing small children. An indispensable tool! It is generously sized, measuring 23"wide (27-1/2" across to the handles), h12-3/4" deep, and 13" tall (excluding the lid). The wash tub holds 16-18 gallons of liquid. The lid fits snuggly - when empty, you can lift the boiler by the center handle on the lid and the lid will completely stay intact. T is an optional / extra insert in the bottom (which is actually the bottom piece of a different 'retired' double boiler) which lifts out. I've kept it since it can give extra strength if the tub is used for heavy things (such as potted plants, books, magazines, or LPs), but it just lifts out (photos taken in & out). The finish on this was professionally refurbished in 2006 to the shiny copper at a cost of $250 just for the refinishing! Since the reserve price is well under that, someone will get a great deal ! I've taken this to the UPS store for exact quotes I have a very sturdy shipping box that was originally for a microwave and the double boiler fits nicely. I've had it to the UPS store & they agree a smaller box would not be safe. The box size is thus considered 'oversize 1' and will ship at 108 inches which is what they call "Dimensional weight of 58#". To keep it simple, I've set shipping at flat rate of $35 via UPS ( USPS will be much more expensive).
