This is a wonderful vintage boiler/wash tub I obtained through my Aunt. My Aunt had a friend who would today be 99 years old, and this friend's parents owned this boiler/wash tub. To give you some general history about these boiler/wash tub, these old boilers were indispensible on the farm and were used in just about every sort of kitchen operation. You would commonly find them used for washing clothes, washing dishes, cooking large batches of food, canning, hauling water, and even giving the kids a bath on Saturday night. If you have ever seen the old Western movie Eldorado, you may recall Robert Mitchum taking a bath in one of these inside the jail as John Wayne and James Caan looked on. My Aunt's friend mentioned bath time as something they used this particular tub for. These boilers were truly the jack of all trades in the turn of the century home. They would always be on the old wood stove, getting water hot for the next task.
This particular boiler/wash tub is a rare treat. Not only does it have known sentimental value, it is in great condition and it comes complete with the original lid. The boiler features old style wooden handles and nice metal work. The wood on the handles is darkened from age & use, but are still in great shape. The lid fits nicely and has the same matching handles as are on the tub itself. Both the boiler & the lid are made of solid copper. The handle hardware on the lid and the 2 side handles are made of another metal. The bottom of the boiler is a bit darker from being used on one of the old wood stoves. The boiler lid has some small dents/dings in it, which can be seen in the photos. As you can see in looking at all the photos attached, it's been well taken care of. The boiler measures 28 inches across the handles, 13 inches wide and 13 inches tall (without the lid). With the lid in place, this piece is about 17 inches. Due to its dimensions this item is considered "oversize" by the US Postal Service.
These antique boilers/wash tubs display quite well. They have many decorative uses. They make great planters for flowers on your deck or patio. Recently, they have become popular for holding fuel for the new corn or pellet stoves. I have also seen them used for storing firewood inside the house. This one would also be perfect for display in that vintage kitchen. The only limit is your own imagination and creativity. Should you have any questions, please email me. 1-25 is additional info. based on customer questions: The wash tub holds 16-18 gallons of liquid. The lid fits snuggly - when empty, you can lift the boiler by the center handle on the lid and the lid will completely stay intact. Please email me should you have any other questions.
