This Bible measures 7 inches long by 6 inches wide and is 2.25 inches thick. It has two hand carved wooden covers that have been drilled and bound with some sort of cording in a "Coptic Binding". The pages are made of vellum. There are about 130 leaves or 260 pages, 7 of which are handpainted Illuminations and are in beautiful condition . The Illuminations are what makes this codex so unique. The photos I took don't really do them justice. The writting is in black and red ink (red usually being reserved for the names of God or Saints) It is written in an ancient Ethiopian language called " Ge'ez", a language no longer used today except by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church for religious purposes. There are a few pages with notes or writting in the margins also seeming to be written in the same language as the bible. Other than those few, most of the pages are in good condition. All of the pages are bound and intact, the last page is the only one that is a little loose and worn. I have no idea the age, but I do know that some of these bibles are estimated to be as old as 700 years. It comes from Aksum, in Ethiopia. Aksum of Ethiopia Ancient African Kingdom of the AxumitesBy K. Kris Hirst , Guide One reason we know what we do about Aksum is the importance placed on written documents by its rulers, particularly Ezana or Aezianas. In the early 4th century AD, Ezana spread his realm north and east, conquering the Nile Valley realm of Meroe and becoming ruler over part of both Asia and Africa. He constructed much of the monumental architecture of Aksum, including a reported 100 stone obelisks, the tallest of which loomed 98 ft over the cemetery in which it stood and weighed 517 tons. Ezana is also known for converting much of Ethiopia to Christianity, around 330 AD. One legend has it that the Ark of the Covenant containing the remnants of the 10 commandments of Moses was brought to Aksum, and Coptic monks have protected it ever since. I've owned this book for over 10 years and I always wanted to have it translated but never found anyone to do it. I fell in love with it when I first saw it and I have contined to cherish it, but I am now having to sell it. This will be the last time I list it and THE LOWEST I will sell it for as I know it is worth more. Please email me if you have any questions or if you want to see anymore images and I will do my best to answer them! Thank you! Again thanks so much! I hope this book finds a wonderful new home. I will ship this within 3 days after your cleared Paypal payment is accepted. I ship USPS Priority Insured.
