A brief history on the rugs and quilts I'm listing this week. They were made by one of 2 people. Either my great grandmother on my mother's side, Mittie Whitman Smith, born in 1853 in Nova Scotia. She moved to North Yarmouth, Maine in the mid 1880's and lived t the rest of her life. The other was my grandmother on my father's side, Annie Lowe Leighton, born in 1864 and lived her whole life in North Yarmouth, Maine till she died in 1917. We think that Mittie probably made the rugs and Annie made the quilts, as Mittie was well known in the area for her handiwork and being very creative, selling much of it to the fine homes in Portland and Falmouth and Annie basically just did quilts. My family owned poultry farms in North Yarmouth since the 1860's. I don't know what actual years each of these items were made, but wanted you to know the history behind them. Thankfully my sisters, cousins and our children have several already and it's time for me to pass these on. Times are hard. Please check my other listings this week as some will be listed in different catagories. The hooked, rag rugs are each made with cotton strips about 1/4" wide, on a burlap backing. T are a few wool strips used, when the color was necessary for the design. They have been pulled up through and looped with about 3/4" of fabric sticking through the top of the rug before being pulled back through. The edges have been finished with rows of braided wool material. The cotton strips are from old dresses, shirts, ticking and probably whatever items were headed to the rag bag, Mainers being frugal in nature (yes, we are - admit it!). They were probably functionally used back when, but were stored in my mother's attic for many years. I displayed them on walls in my home, but they've been stored for about 10 years now. None of these rugs have been cleaned, and they should be cleaned by someone who knows what they're doing with such old materials, but I will detail the condition of each one. I don't know if they were made using a commercial pattern or were an original design, but at least 2, on the floor side, show part of the colors from the lettering of what was probably the feed sacks from the farm. Each rug is being sold as is, in antique, as found condition. This auction is for a 34 1/2" by 17" rug. I think this is my favorite of the ones I'm listing, wonderful, rich, warm, vibrant colors banded with a dark color palette in the braided edges, very log cabin or lodge feeling, looks amazing on a wall. The last picture is the bottom, which is bright, tight and secure, a couple of pulls, which should be able to be repaired. No missing strips, holes or rips. T are a few pulls on the top that should be able to be repaired using the same available material, by pushing it back through the burlap base. T's some wear to the very edges, but nothing that wouldn't be expected, A few stitches should clean them up.. Please feel free to email me with any questions and I'll do my best to answer quickly.
