Discovered during the renovation of a N.Essex village shop premises, this appears to be a counter top cigar/ cigarette lighter of some considerable age, I would guess being from the early 20th century. My knowledge of this type of item is very limited and I hope that the many pictures I have added will tell their own story. The subject matter of the cast metal sculpture is unusual and appealed to my sense of humour, featuring a monkey in an " Alas poor Yorick " pose, studying a skull whilst perched on a pile of books. The lighter stands almost 7" tall and the base is 3" square. The metal looks as if it had a bronzed finish originally but this has clearly worn in some places, to display a grey metal. The hinge has an old repair but works fine and is in very solid condition. Weight is approx. 2lb and was obviously made to stand the rigours of much use. No knowledge, so no reserve seems an appropriate maxim in this case but having never seen another, this could be quite a scarcity !
