Old/Antique CULLER Williamsport PA Birdseye Maple Bed
This is a beautiful old double/full-size antique birdseye maple bed made by Culler Furniture company, Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Has hand-painted design on head and foot board; some of it has worn off (see pics). It is in excellent used condition with normal wear for the age; still has the Culler paper label on inside of the rail. NO REPAIRS, breaks, gouges - just old scratches on the rails. Following is all the info I could find on the Culler Furniture Co. Christopher Luther Culler was born in West Milton, Pennsylvania, on October 27, 1859. He attended Dickinson Seminary, predecessor of Lycoming College, in the years 1876-78. He became a prominent citizen in the Williamsport, PA community in the years after he left the Seminary. Mr. Culler owned and operated the Culler Furniture Company, organized in 1893, with E.A. Rowlek and Robert Hawley. The company expanded through two locations, culminating its operation at the foot of Susquehanna Street in Williamsport. Mr. Culler died in 1924 at the age of 65; I can find no information about the company after 1924.
The company gained a national reputation through its chief product, chairs. The plant covered seven and a half acres and 100,000 square feet of space. The huge Culler Chair, the company symbol, stood on the roof of the building, a landmark to all passers-by. BABE RUTH once hit a home run over the Culler Chair during an exhibition game played in the early days of the NYPEN Baseball League (New York-Pennsylvania League of 1923 through 1937 was an American minor league baseball circuit). The Pennsylvania College of Technology now occupies the site.
