This is one of my favorite microscopes. This Culpeper Tripod is made of extra thick brass, has quality engraving, and unusual optics. The eyepiece second lens is plano-concave rather than plano-convex or double-convex as usual, giving greater eye relief. The second lens also has an unusual ground glass rim, serving as a stop. The eyepiece is protected by a sliding dust cover. The 'scope stands 11 inches high closed and 13 inches by drawtube focus. It retains much of its original laquer, and, along with the case, is an excellent example in fine condition. The single sided mirror is rather spotted. The original fine mahogany case, 14 inches high, is in excellent condition, noting a few tiny chips on the back corner. The lock is present and appears to be complete, but the key is frozen in the lock, which does not operate. The microscope retains several fine accessories. T is a Bonnani spring stage which rests in a circular opening in the stage. The ivory (bone?) sliders are in excellent condition, and are numbered 1, 2 and 4, with #3 missing. T is an assortment of botanical, arthropod, and unknown specimens held between sheets of mica (talcs). One specimen and its talcs is missing. The fish plate retains its original silk (?) ribbon whose purpose was to restrain a fish for viewing of the circulation of blood in its tail fin. The series of holes in the fish plate were to sew the tail down to keep it still for viewing. T are four interchangeable lens, however one is missing its glass. Present is a nice lathe turned brass case/box of unknown function (holding specimens?). Missing would be the stage forceps, bullseye condensor, and dissecting tools. I purchased this microscope in 1983, and much of the stated information comes from David Coffeen of Tesseract. I will include the Tesseract catalog containing this 'scope in the purchase, as well as a letter from David Coffeen attesting to much of the above. Shipping will be for actual insured cost, usually UPS ground. Payment by other than Pay Pal will require final clearing of check etc. before item will be shipped.
