I am ebaying this and one or two other antiques for an 85 year old family friend who is fit and well but wants to put some finances aside for a 'rainy day'. Usually I'd give 10% to Help for Heroes but on this occassion as 100% of the profits will go to a good cause I'll make an exception. In 1908 the Grandfather of our friend took the train from Alton to Leek in Staffordshire and bought this phonograph for his 18 year old son, James Burton, who was suffering from T.B., in order to cheer him up. Sadly the young man died that same year. The phonograph and record collection have remained in the family ever since. In the last two weeks I've done a great deal of research on this item and have learned the following; "Angelica" was one of the brand names used by John G. Murdoch & Sons, also the Murdoch Trading Company, a large firm of musical instrument wholesalers who also had their own retail outlets in many towns throughout the UK. The phonograph was made by 'Excelsior', Excelsiorwerke Coln, (EWC), in Germany. "No Edison", the website about antique phonographs other than Edison phonographs shows the exact same model, the "Excelsior Open Works" and provides some detail.
