This is an unusual antique salt box (sometimes called a salt crock). It is a combination of a fine art piece and a utilitarian product. The stamp on the bottom, Czecho-Slovakia, indicates that it was made before 1918. Czecho and Slovakia were two separate nations prior to 1918. This attractive box is white stoneware with a dark green and black enamel design. It has its original red wood lid that is attached with its original nails. The box is 6 1/2 inches at its tallest point in the back where the key hole opening is located and 4 1/2 inches in the front with the lid closed. It is 3 3/4 inches deep. The white box is clean and shiny The enamel is also clean and shiny with no fading and there are no cracks, or chips in the lid. This salt box shows the usual wear and tear of older pieces that have been loving used for long periods of time. It has some chips, wear cracks, and rough spots. Additionally there are some pock marks, paint drips under the white enamel and some irregular thicknesses, all from the manufacturing process. None of these detract from the charm of this great piece which would be a wonderful addition to any collection.
