Here is a beautiful, glazed drabware covered jug. This unmarked jug likely dates to the end of the 18th century, or the beginning of the 19th. It measures 9-1/2" to the top of the finial, and about 6" from the front of the spout to the back of the handle. The finial of the jug is a very detailed bunch of grapes, arising from a section of grapevine with leaves done in relief on the lid. The lid has a complex shape, which sits carefully inside the tabs which hold it in place. The handle is composed of two entwined grape vines which extend onto the upper body of the jug at the top of the handle. The rest of the jug is smooth, and is beautiful in its shape and glaze. The spout has a strainer at the back. Taking all the design details into consideration, it appears that the jug must have been intended for some type of warm wine punch, although there is no evidence that the piece ever was used, other than as a shelf piece. The condition is excellent, with no chips, cracks or repairs. Mold marks are visible on the front and back, but there is no staining or damage to the glaze. This would be a fine addition to the collection of a discerning collector. I would be most happy to hear from anyone with suggestions as to maker on this fine piece.
