Submitted for your approval: A beautiful example of 19th. century Dyak Mandau headhunter's sword from Borneo. The sword is complete with scabbard and shoulder straps. The blade measures 17 1/8 inches long; 3/4 inch wide at the ricasso; 1 3/8 inches at the widest point and 1/4 inch thick. The forged blade is beveled on one side and slightly concave on the other showing areas of surface oxidation with no heavy pitting; carved bone grip in excellent condition with hair present; beautifully carved scabbard showing intricate rattan weaving, not found on tourist pieces. Rattan is complete with no breaks or missing pieces; lower portion of scabbard decorated with three round pieces of polished shell. Overall length in scabbard is 24 3/4 inches. These older Dyak swords are becoming quite scarce, especially in this condition and would be a welcomed addition to any ethenographic weapon collection.
