Offering a beautiful and rare antique early American pressed glass 8" compote in the "Log Cabin" pattern #748 by made by Central Glass Company between 1875 and 1883. The pattern was originally made in clear, amber, blue and canary; and all pieces in color are extremely rare and very expensive. Compotes were made in four different sizes (4", 6", 7" and 8"), so this is the largest size for the pattern. The base of the compote looks like a knot holed tree trunk. The cabin is formed with logs which are stacked at the corners with stippling between the logs to look like mortar. They are very difficult to find without damage to the lids. Other known pieces in the pattern are bowls, a four piece table set (butter, sugar, creamer and spooner), a covered marmalade, a water pitcher and a flat sauce dish. Authentic original pieces of this pattern can be distinguished by the presence of a rope loop latch on the front door. Reproductions do not have that feature. This piece measures approximately 9" to the top of the chimney, five inches deep, and 6.6" in length. It has the rope loop patch on the door as seen in one of the detail photos. There is some roughness and flaking on the inside rim of the base which is common for pieces of this age.
