This Antique Cakestand is known as MINERVA aka ROMAN MEDALLION produced by Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. c.1870s. This particular cakestand is highly sought after by collectors and has great presence and stature. The glass is Clear & SPARKLING and GLOWS greatly under blacklight. It stands 6.5" and the plate diameter is 9 inches ~ nice and lofty. The design is so intensely embossed on the underneath side of the plate that all of the small balls making up so much of the design give a BEAUTIFUL optic enhancement and play on the light. T are 3 Roman Gods or Goddesses encircled within the design, hence the ROMAN MEDALLION name. Please look closely at the photograph of the pedestal as t are 3 ribs coming down the pedestal and ending atop the foot wth a small ball. The foot is thick but hollow with a solid pedestal. The pedestal then folds down to two rounded tiers followed by an octogonal base. You will be hard pressed to find use marks on the plate. Of course t are the imperfections in glass of this period but nothing that catches your eye AT ALL. The bottom of the foot is somewhat rough, I believe from the making. T is one tiny abrasion on the top tip of w one of the corners of the foot is cut. I have photographed this but not sure you will be able to see it. If you look at the photo it is about one third up from the bottom of the picture and just a little to the right of the center. It is more an abrasion than a knick and it too could have been from mold removal in the making. Simply a beautiful piece of history with the theme of Roman Gods or Goddesses fit for Valentines Day.
