Elegance, beauty, and functionality You are bidding on a lovely, full-size Eastlake style bed, circa 1870-1890. Made with fine American walnut, this bed is beautifully proportioned, with graceful lines and accented with attractive spoon carving and walnut (on walnut) burls. A nicely carved bonnet completes the elegance. It is in excellent condition, ready to present as a gift or bring home to use. The Eastlake furniture style originated from Charles Lock Eastlake and his book, Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery and other Details . In it, he emphasizes his dislike for over-the-top Rococo and Renaissance Revival styles popular during the Victorian era, and proposed a more tasteful, elegant style. Although Eastlake furniture is technically considered Victorian, being popular from 1870-1890, it breaks away from the excessive high relief carving, classical elements and numerous curves of other styles produced during this period. In contrast with other Victorian styles of furniture produced in America featuring classical motifs, Eastlake furniture is more geometric and incorporates modest curves. It sometimes includes mild Renaissance and medieval influences that do not overwhelm the design. Ornamental carving seen on these pieces is lightly incised rather than deeply carved and wood element was emphasized, tby allowing the rich hues and patterns of the wood to serve as the focus of the design, and not as a base for intricate carvings. From the pictures, you can see this bed is an excellent example of the Eastlake tradition in solid American walnut. The beautiful texture and color of the wood, simple elegant carving, and graceful lines are innt throughout the bed. In addition, the maker's choice of walnut is unsurpassed. T is something about old American walnut that gives a feeling of richness and warmth, and this bed is no exception. I've taken photos indoors and out, in order to provide clear images of the bed (outdoors), and also to provide a sense of the color, depth, and warmth of the wood in an indoor setting. As you can see, it is in fine condition, with the only defect being a broken piece on one of the side rails (the curved piece that sits on the side rail), which could easily be duplicated and repaired. This is a full-size bed, with approximate dimensions of: Footboard height: 32 ¾" Footboard width: 59" Headboard height: 76 ½" Headboard width: 59" Inside dimensions: 54 ½" x 73 ¼" Previously purchased in 1967, outside of Middleburg, Virginia, this is a fantastic bargain and would be a great gift (or addition to your home), and could be the centerpiece of any bedroom, providing a lifetime of functionality, beauty and pleasure.
