Antique Early American Electric Desk LampUNIQUE ! ! ! Over 100 years old... Manufactured by Joseph L. Shoemaker Co., Philadelphia, PA circa 1900. Joseph L. Shoemaker Co., established in 1884, was located at 924-928 Arch Street in Philly. As far back as I can remember, my dad, a Philadelphia Lawyer and City Arbitrator, had this collectible in his law office at 13 th and Walnut in Philly, just blocks from Shoemaker's Arch Street location (and right across the street from the world famous Wanamaker's Department Store. I have not been able to find another lamp like this, though I did find a photo of one that is similar. This lamp, made of heavy metal (including the shade) (bronze alloy) ?, has GREAT patina...some green on underside. It is in need of a good cleaning, but I am afraid to touch it. I would suggest having it professionally cleaned. Maker inscribed on the bottom of the base "Jos. L. Shoemaker, Phila., PA" E-mail me for more photos.
This listing may be starting higher than my other auctions, but that is just indicative of the sentimental value attached to this piece. Philly is near and dear to me...and I LOVE the history. This will be a GREAT addition to your collection! For more information about Joseph L. Shoemaker Co, see articles in the Furniture Database Collection available at the Grand Rapids Public Library: (/collections/grhsty_spcoll/furniture/furniture_record_r-t.html) Please ask questions prior to bidding.
