This panel was part of a collection recently purchased at auction. Four matching valances and eight matching curtain tie backs will also be listed today. Purchase these and they will be shipped with your large panel at no additional shipping expense. The owner maintained these fabrics were from the late 1700s or early 1800s. I can't pretend to be an expert on this but I can tell you what I observe and you may come to your own conclusions.(It is certainly very old) First, it measures 14' (168") by 19 1/2". It is in need of cleaning and restoration. The silk is in pretty good shape but t are a few small tears and holes. T is some staining. This is more obvious on the linen back. Having described the problems, it remains absolutely remarkable. This great expance of embroidery features gold and silver metal thread. Silver metal thin ribbon forms the vining in most places over home spun wool.(I've not encountered metal ribbon in the past) In other places the vines are alternating gold and silver metal thread over home spun wool. The vines connect an intricate array of leaves and flowers in beautifully rendered silk. T is green, yellow, gold, salmon, apricot, silver, blue, grey, pink, white, raspberry and red silk with several colors in various shades. The blossoms often radiate from their centers shifting color tones to the outside of the petals with layering and subtle changes in the silk applied. The centers of the blossoms are often gold and silver metal thread. Along the base is a gold metal fringe. The quality of the workmanship is unrivaled.
