AntiqueMother of Pearl Tape Measure English * Circa 1830 This antique tape measure has mother of pearl at the top and bottom and nickel silver (I think) around the sides. The side is stamped "Chesterman's Patent Sheffield". James Chesterman was born in 1792 and died in 1867. In 1829 he received a British patent for a device that used a spring to automatically rewind a tape measure. This measure has the original and complete woven tape marked in inches on one side and "Nails" on the other . Nails were an early form of British measure and each nail was 2 1/4" (16 to the yard). It's stamped "6" on the side and I think that means it's 6 feet long. I'm not going to pull it all the way out to see. The condition of the case is excellent with no chips, dents or cracks. It measures 1 5/8" in diameter and the mother of pearl has nice luminescence . It's in excellent working order with the original stop and the tape snaps right back in. This is a very rare tape and the condition is amazing for a piece that's almost 200 years old. I stand behind everything that I offer and guarantee that it is exactly as presented. ** Full Insurance is included in the low shipping price for all of my auctions. ** ** Illustrated newsletters available on Antique Sewing Tools ** If you would like to be on my mailing list and receive the newsletters, email read more
