You are viewing what I have been told is an antique English bronze or brass figural countertop cigar lighter, c. 1880's. It is a satyr figure squatting in front of an urn. In Greek mythology satyrs are man on the upper half of the body and goat on the lower half. They have a long tail, horns, (although this one has a hat on), pointed ears and the mature satyrs are bearded like this one. They were nature spirit companions of Pan and Dionysius and brothers of mountain numphs and Kuretes. This piece is 5-1/2" tall and 4" long. The urn is 2-7/8" tall. The urn top had a hinged flap or cover which is missing. The 1/4" hole in the middle of the top of the urn must have been w the oil or burning liquid was filled. Then on each side of the urn is a 3/4" piece coming out from the urn with a hole in the top w a wick of some sort must of stuck out. I'm not sure exactly how it worked. It sits perfectly flat on the tabletop but the base of the urn has a slight wrinkle in the top side of the base in the front but does not affect how it sits. No identifying marks that I can see. I acquired this from the estate of someone who collected and repaired rare antiquities, so be your own curator. A very unique piece. More pictures available if requested. Thanks for looking and please check out my other listings.
