Antique English Oak Barley Twist Monk's Bench Table Solid Oak Panels, Carved Trim, Thick Barley twist Posts This listing is for a beautiful antique English oak monk's bench. These benches are getting more difficult to find in today's market, and one with barley twist posts is quite rare and truly a treasure to behold!! I purchase primarily at English container sales and attend several each week; over a year's time I typically see only three or four monk's bench's, most of which are Edwardian, constructed with oak and oak veneer paneling. Not so on this beauty, THIS BENCH has SOLID OAK PANELS, giving it substantial weight and sturdiness. It was obviously crafted with great attention to detail, with generous oak molding everyw, and applied carved wood trim on both front panels and the seat back. A collector's piece in its own right, this monk's bench is sure to dominate interest and be the focal point in any room, yet it is also quite useful, as it easily serves as a bench with the top open......... or as a table with the top closed.........not to mention the storage inside the bench.......and with the colorful history of a "monk's bench", this is a piece that can truly be in your family for generations to come! The measurements: 31"H x 42" L x 19 ¼" W; with the top flipped up as a seat back, the height is 38 ½"; (with the top down as a table, the height is 31"); with top down as a table, the height between bench seat and top is 12 ½"; inside storage area is appx. 13" x 14" x 36". To "convert" the piece from table to bench, the paneled top has grooved oak brackets on each side that slide on heavy wood pegs inserted through the brackets (see photos). The monk's bench is in good condition for its age, visually appealing and structurally sound, with normal signs of age and use, scratches, dings and other imperfections. I personally believe it would be a showcase piece in any home, and I am noting the following signs of age for disclosure purposes, with photos of each included with the listing: The oak plank on the inside bottom of the bench has a separation and the lower molding on one side has a repaired split. The backside of the paneled bench top (or the topside when in table position) has two repairs in the grooves of the panels, not on the flat surface. They are not all the way through the wood, and not visible from the other side. Interested buyers can feel free to email me if additional information or photos are desired --- again, I consider this an exceptional piece, with none of these signs of age impacting the beauty or value. As with all my furniture, I make careful selection of quality pieces and provide multiple photos and written information. But please keep in mind they are antiques with many years of age and use and will show scratching, usage marks or other imperfections. You should consider an antique piece if you value unique style, craftsmanship, and the use of quality materials.
