On offer from England is this magnificent antique English sterling silver lidded trophy cup bearing the hallmarks for London 1772 , and the makers marks of Charles Wright . The full hallmarks appear up under the base and a further full set is to be found on the inner lip of the lid rim . The overall height is 14.6 " , the diameters are base, 5.5 " cup top 6 " , and the handle width is 13.5 " . The weight is 1940 grams ; yes , that is no mistake , the trophy does weigh that much , 1940 grams. How to start describing such a wonderful piece of English silversmithing ? It was made , although created would seem a more appropriate word, whilst King George 111 was on the throne of England . The whole is a tour de force exemplifying all that is best in the gentle art of silversmithing . The button finial is atop an oblique spiral of two sizes , giving onto a domed lid profusely decorated with floral and foliar motifs , two cartouches with shingled interiors , below which is a further series of smaller cartouches each with shingled interiors . Lower is a decorative stippled band with oval beads within gives on to an oblique gadrooned border. The bulbous body of the cup itself bells out towards the top rim. At the rim is a band of shingled decoration with scrolling below . The front boasts an ornate blind cartouche with floral motifs above and below. On the back is wondrous display of foliar , floral , shingled and swagged decorations. The handles are just the most impressive I have ever come across. The great scrolls erupt from just below the cup rim with a flamboyance not often seen . The handles are most complex and I can only suggest a very careful examination of the images to fully appreciate their beauty. The handles terminate with a satyr mask ; that under the right handle is awake , smiling with open eyes , that under the left is asleep , grimacing with closed eyes . The lower part of the cup body has further shingling , foliar and floral decoration. The base splays out gently , with a floral band just above the oblique gadrooning . T is no inscription to the cartouche , so you display this wonderful antique trophy cup as it is or have your own dedication inscribed ton. The whole is in EXCELLENT CONDITION and is beautifully polished ready to go on display. For your guidance , I use the words " EXCELLENT CONDITION " only if it is .......," GOOD CONDITION " to indicate that t are no serious condition problems , but t may be surface blemishes such as minor dings, dents or scratches commensurate with the age of the piece........ I use the words " REASONABLE CONDITION " to indicate that t are blemishes , ripples , dings , dents etc which I will always describe fully and photograph w possible .
