Up for sale is a late 1800's Fainting Couch/Sofa/Bed. This unique item is in very good condition for its age, and is actually quite comfortable to sit on. It has the original manufacturer's tag and patent medallions on the back. This piece measures approximately 72 inches long by 24 inches deep by 38 inches tall. This piece carries a bit of history. This couch was created and patented by by Harry Prufrock of the Prufrock furniture company in St. Louis, Missouri in 1895 & 1896. You may recognize the name "Prufrock" from T.S. Eliot's " The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock". It is said that he took the name "Prufrock" from a sign on the Prufrock-Littau Furniture Company of his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, when he wrote the poem in 1911. This couch will actually fold out to make a fairly narrow double bed. It has a strap you pull up, and a leg then is moved to support that end of the bed. The headrest supports the other end. At one time, the back panel sat in brackets so that you could take off the back. One of the brackets is gone. That end is now permanently attached with screws. Upholstery is in decent shape.
