Incredible diary/journal/ scrapbook from pre- depression 1920's mid-west town of Reading, Michigan. Written and compiled by Mrs. Edith Inman, using a Universal composition book. Inside are over 90 photos of family, town, lake and vacation (Niagara Falls, various Michigan locations), newspaper clippings, a real photo postcard of the building of a church, and hand written narrative. She began her writing in December 1924 and ends in 1927, although several pages are updated...She has photos of her dog "Spot" she bought in November 1924, and has a note later that Spot died "May 14, 1936 of distemper". She has stories of locals, weather, happenings and even a review of several plays put on by a California stock company of actors. T are photos (see below) of the remains of the Reading High school after a fire March 3, 1927 (and a clipping from the Reading Hustler newspaper), also a few businesses in the town, cottage at Long Lake (wow, has that area changed!). She has a written account of the drowning of M.J. Bigelow..."Drown Oct. 4, 1926, came up in ten days". T is also a newspaper clipping about this. Another clipping about Lindbergh's flight to France. The most fascinating story concerns the 1927 dynamiting of the Bath School by Andrew Kehoe, in which 45 people died...t are 3 photos of that. In the journal is a brochure published by the Ku Klux Klan and attacks the Roman Catholic Church as the root of his deed. "These 45 lives were sacrificed to satisfy the lust of a shrewd mind, poisoned by intolerant religious dogma.". It goes on to charge the church with torture, burnings, and murder...and to charge the newspapers with suppressing the facts. Some of the families mentioned in the diary are Inman, Jenkins, Cowell, Lamb, Swope, Hollingshead, Niess, Tittle, Easterday, Knuth, and Arnold. Has a lot of wear, but still readable and the photos are in good condition and well done. This is a joy to read, a charming and informative narrative. Please wait for your invoice before paying. I charge actual shipping, no handling, but because of the new dimensional scale your rates may be higher (depending on your location). I use a lot of unusual packing materials...I get them cheap at auctions so I don't have to charge handling. Thanks for looking.
