Whipple's Rectangular Churn - Circa. 1885 Up for auction is a Whipple's Rectangular Churn. Why they called this churn rectangular I'm not exactly sure, because the wooden churn box measures exactly 18" square. It is stenciled on five sides four of which contain the awards the churn had won. is what each side is marked: 1) Whipple's Rectangular Churn, Pat'd Jan 21st 1868 and July 7th 1885, Awarded Sweepstakes Gold Medal St. Louis 1883. 2)Awarded First Premium and Medal by the Worlds Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, New Orleans 3) Grand Union Dairy Fair, Milwaukee, Gold Medal 1882 4) First Premium State Fair, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois, St. Louis, Iowa. 5)Cornish Curtis Green Mfg Co, Fort Adkinson Wis, No. 3 In addition to the red award stenciling, t is quite a bit of lattice and floral stenciling around the edges in green. Each corner contains a steel brace, one of which has the crank, and an opposite corner with a peg. T is no stand included for the churn. The handle will be removed for shipping, and the box will ship by UPS. I won't have an exact amount until it is all packed up, but rest assured you will pay only my actual UPS charge. Unpacked the churn weighs approximately 30 lbs. The churn is solid. I have included large photos of each side. Over the past 120 odd years the wood has shrunk ever so slightly leaving minor separations in the tongue-in-groove components. The paint is thoroughly worn on the top. T are some nicks and scratches on the other sides as can be seen in the photos. This is a great old piece of Americana! Feel free to contact me should you have any questions.
