Of My…I absolutely Love this fabulous Antique 1896 John Maddock & Sons Pitcher and Bowl Set. It is by far the nicest set I have ever purchased. It is adorned with the most lovely floral design boasting Roses, Lillies, Forget-me-knots (I believe that is what they are) and trailing vines throughout the entire set. It is a nice deep blue with white. The date of the piece was determined by the stamp on the bottom of both the bowl and pitcher. It also has a small 8 next to the stamp. The pattern name is "Brooklyn". The set is from the Royal Vitreaous England line. I have added additional information I found while researching the stamp. (please see bottom of page for this info) The condition is a amazing for an antique set. I could find no flaws except an occasional glaze pop from firing. No hairlines, repairs, chips or crazing seen with the visible eye. Pieces this beautiful and in this wonderful of condition come around seldom in ones lifetime. Pitcher measures a Huge 11.5" Tall and is 9.5" at its widest point Bowl measures 15" at widest point x 5" deep The backstamp dates to ca. 1896. The company started in 1842 - 55 with marks denoting 'J. Maddock'; from 1855-70 the mark included 'J. Maddock and Son'; From 1870 the change was "and Sons". Then in 1896, "Ltd" was added. The designation of 'Royal Vitreous' was used during 1880-1896. John Maddock was ahead of his time! According to the excellent Stoke-on-Trent website, he required that employees join a sick club. and was a member of Burslem Board of Health from 1850 to1868, serving as chairman and chief bailiff during 1852-3 and 1854-5, respectively. In 1852, when the Baths and Washhouses Act was not adopted in Burslem, he offered to build public baths at his own expense - only asking that he be £50 each year. /mark/m/maddock.html (mark on bottom authenticity) I will be shipping and packing through a professional shipper 60 miles from our home to protect against breakage. It will be shipped with Insuance Included on this valuable set. No refunds once purchased. All items come from a smoke and pet free home. Thanks for viewing my auctions. May the Lord richly bless you and your family.
