Antique Flower Basket Quilt from Kentucky pre 1860's Zig-Zag border on two edges, some fabric wear, measures 81 x 66 (trundle bed) Dear friends, We are proud to present to you more from our friend's home in Kentucky. The original house was built in 1804, occupied for eight generations. The last four generations were our friend's family, and as she said, "No one threw anything away!" The variety of goods we have for sale is staggering. This week we are showing you her quilts. These are all from the same home, same family, appraised as dating "between 1850 to 1890, if not older". **THIS QUILT WAS APPRAISED AS "PRE-1860's"** I'll be happy to provide more photos as you need 'em. Pattern: Flower Basket. 1/2 inch square grid quilting on the body, (straight rows 3/8 inch apart, 10 to 12 stitches per inch on the 2 1/4 inch wide border). BEAUTIFULLY quilted, TERRIFICALLY pieced. The applique'd handles of the flower baskets are set on with the tiniest of stitches. The quilting is **so regular stitched**, and the piecing is just grand. This quilt has no intials, but perhaps was made by our master quilter, Ms. Prewitt. Sadly the pink applique fabric is in poor shape due to strong pattern dyes, but we don't see "popping" on the seams. Colors are pretty well preserved, with some fading on certain baskets. However, the overall effect is a lovely pastel, and the stitching is for a family heirloom! Backing is natural muslin. Original binding is same fabric, bound on separately. In OUTSTANDING and CLEAN condition, NO wear on edges. Batting: Field cotton - seeds are visible when held to the light. Thin batting. Stains: Some blue-gray storage stains, visible in pictures. No wear except from dye decay (probably the brown patterns on the pinks), some fading of colors. This quilt was preserved so beautifully. Essentially NO age darkening on the reverse. Could be washed, but the fabric has a lovely stiff feel to it - has not been softened by washing up till now. This wonderful quilt, a miniature treasure sized at 81 x 66 inches, would show with pride as a wall hanging, or cozily cover a child's bed. The brown pattern on the pink fabric has worn on every basket, but t is no over all wear - the quilting stitches are firm and secure. All hand-stitched, and hand-quilted. This quilter was a master - her work is astoundingly even, and a great example of "How It Should Be Done". If she'd chosen stronger fabrics, we'd have a true jewel on our hands. FAMILY HISTORY: The consigner of these quilts is a direct descendant of the signers of the quilts in this collection (three we have listed this week are signed). Her great-grandfather was Dr. Moreau Sequard Browne, born 1840, Confederate veteran of the "War for Independent Rights". His first wife died in childbirth (in her 20's!) in 1886. His second wife was a Prewitt, probably the signer of one of our other quilts "H. Prewitt Browne". She had a son, Henry Clay Prewitt, who died as a teen after being struck by a baseball in July 1913. His name is on that same quilt. Our consigner is also the great-granddaughter of Ella Watson Haggard, born 1867, who was raised by HER grandparents, Whitfield Moody (b 1810 died 1891) of Kingston, Kentucky and Lucinda Clements Moody.
