CIRCA---From 1903-1944, however, from the way it's constructed it's most likely 1930's. ORIGIN---This is said to be from "Luna Park" in Coney Island New York. Was beleived to be off of a carosel. I am selling some items from a prominent "FOLK ART" collector, from the Williamsburg Virginia area. This item was said to have been purchased in the late 1980's, from a high end Folk Art Gallery in New York City. Unfortunately, I have NO written provenience on this item. BIT OF INFO---Luna Park was an amusement park at Coney Island, Brooklyn New York. Luna Park was open to the public and operating from 1903 too 1944. Luna Park was the second major amusement park in Coney Island. This FABULOUS, RARE carosel decoration captures the "mirthful" essense of the park. DESCRIPTION---WHAT IS IT?---This is one of about 15 to 20 CLOWN face panels, that went around the middle of a carosel. These panels were made to be hinged together (see pictures). As mentioned earlier, this item is said to have come from the FAMOUS "LUNA PARK" in NYC. It is obviously visually "SPOT ON" perfect and amazing in every way. SIZE-SHAPE-COLOR---The panel is 36 1/2 inches high and 24 inches at the widest part. The bottom width is 12 inches across. The clown's face is hand painted on a flat piece of wood. The panel, with the painting is framed in wood that is 2 inches deep and the front of the frame is 2 inches across (see pictures). T are four hinges, that would have connected this panel too the next clown panel, and so on and so forth. The frame is a shade of navy blue and the recessed part of the frame is a deep red color. The clown's face is filled with "AMUSEMENT", it's gleeful, cheerful and full of that RARE carnival child-like JOY. The paint is 1930's polychrome. The face is entirely hand painted (see pictures). The clown's smile is "CAPTIVATING" and his eye's are full of surprise. He has a collar made up of numorous, hand painted, half-moon shapes. The color's of his face are as follows---creme, red, brown, tan, and black. His collar is, red, yellow, creme, robin's egg blue, and a whitish color. The back ground color, behind the clown's head is a robin's egg blue color. The outer rim of the frame is red and the back side of the panel is orange (see picture's). CONDITION---Good, considering the age. However, t is paint loss---as expected---on the actual "picture". The paint loss is occurring mostly on the back ground color. T is slight paint loss on the face of the clown (see picture). T is a crack in the entire surface of the clown's face, due to age and exposure to the elements of time, rain, heat, etc. The "crack" does not detract from the overall "look" of this RARE item. The back ground panel is made of early plywood---the first layer is cracked. The crack does NOT go through too the back. The back of this fabulous clown panel is very weatd and definitely shows age (see pictures). This item is VERY RARE, as LUNA PARK was forced to close it's doors in 1944. This is a true piece of AMERICAN history. VERY IMPORTANT TERMS OF SALE---Please feel free to email me with any and all questions BEFORE the auction ends, as I have a ABSOLUTELY NO RETURNS policy.
