Selling a 19th century decorated folk art "marriage yoke." This entire piece was hand made and the design is simply amazing. The forged nickel fittings on each end are shaped like hearts. The top is adorned with numerous stars, all created using brass tacks in different sizes. There is also a fancy center medallion that may be copper or bronze, I'm not sure. The wood looks like oak. In parts of Europe, such as in central Russia, specially decorated yokes were often used as part of a marriage ceremony. When the wedding party left to go to the church where the marriage was to be held, the decorated yoke was used on the wedding sleigh or carriage. It was a symbol of the special ceremony that was about to occur. In her 1995 book, Russian Folk Art , Allison Hilton (professor, Georgetown University) writes about the decorated marriage yoke in 19th century Russian peasant life. This marriage yoke is in excellent condition. It is missing just one small brass tack, which is hard to notice because the design is so busy. What a great piece of 19th century folk art!
