ANTIQUE FOLK ART WATERCOLOR PORTRAIT PAINTING OF A BOY AND HIS DOG VERY PRIMITIVE AND NAIVE SO SWEET AND CUTE! EARLY 1800'S Justin from one of the many estate loads we receive in our shop each month is this wonderful ANTIQUE FOLK ART watercolor painting of a sweet little boy and his dog . This great vintage painting dates to the early 1800's . It has an excellent folksy naive quality and the subject matter has real charm and desirability. This is a nice example of a true EARLY AMERICAN FOLK ART PORTRAIT. Non-academic and totally natural! So primitive and naive! Original VINTAGE FOLK ART PORTRAIT paintings are highly sought after today and command high prices on the open market! This lovely painting measures 9 by 7.75 inches framed with the painting itself measuring 7 by 5.75 inches. The frame is covered in a chipped dark brick red dull finished paint, perhaps original old milk paint. It's a simple four-square block frame, very primitive, but complements the painting so well. The painting is under glass which we removed for photographing and examination. We have posted many photos taken in a variety of lights so you can get a better idea of the strength of the colors. The vivid colors of red, yellow and green are only slightly softened , still retaining most of their original vibrancy. This painting was probably not exposed to a lot of sunlight as it still retains most of it's strength of color. The bright grass green drapery with it's dripping yellow fringe is a nice counterpoint to the pinky reds of the dress. The black of the dog's coat seems to pop out at the viewer. The artist had some talent, not academic, but a naive skill that is very appealing . This is a winsome and sweet subject matter , the little black and white dog is so cute and charming , and the little boy in his 'of the period' lacy red striped outfit is adorable . The little spotted pup looks up at his master in a playful manner. The artist did a good job of communicating some personality of the subjects, the eyes of the boy are particularly well executed with a direct gaze that seems to look out at the viewer, meeting eye to eye, drawing the viewer into the scene. The real determination of value, whether signed or unsigned, for this type of FOLK ART portrait, rests in the composition and subject matter. This charming painting scores on both points! The child is cute and rosy cheeked, AND he's posing with his adoring pet! What more can you ask for in a great little unstudied Folk portrait! It's simple and naive, primitive and non-academic, totally sweet and oh so charming! And nicely framed, too! A TOTALLY CHARMING AND ORIGINAL EARLY 1800'S FOLK ART PAINTING!
