ANTIQUE FRANCIS BARKER BRASS POCKET WATCH COMPASS 1880� FRANCIS BARKER POCKET WATCH CASED COMPASS c.1875-1900 A rare Francis Barker nickel plated brass pocket watch cased compass, dating from around 1875-1900. Although it does not have the distinctive 'TML' Barker trademark, the design is a well-known Barker style. I have had another completely identical example of this compass, the only difference being it had the Barker logo at 'N'. This particular compass was retailed by Armstrong & Brother of Deansgate in Manchester and has their label attached to the compass card. Armstrong's were established in Manchester in 1825, they were a well known firm of opticians, jewellers and retailers of scientific instruments. They became Armstrong & Brother around 1868 when Thomas Armstrong's brother joined the company. The compass is in excellent condition and finds North very well. The push button opens the case and it shuts with a nice firm snap. The hinge is in very good condition and springs the lid open nicely. The transit lock is present and working. The original glass is in very good condition. The hand-drawn paper compass card is in very good condition. The pointer is an English Bar Needle with a jewelled cap.
