~*~Hello and thank you for looking~*~ Beautiful floral and pillar print, 18th century French textile ~ This wonderful, and rare textile dates c1770 and was once used as part of a bed surround. This pelmet is lightly quilted and backed in 18th century homespun hemp. The front fabric is a stunning block printed siamoise ( hand-spun linen and cotton mix yarns of uneven diameter producing a knobbly surface and a soft texture) . The simoise block prints were some of the earliest block printed textiles in the 1770's. This textile was most likely either produced in Orange or by Rodolphe Wetter who established the first block printing factory just outside of Marseilles. This fabric would have been one of the most expensive of its day as there is red in the print, and blue. The outline and the red appear to have been mordant printed ( block printed using a mordant ( iron in the case of the outline and an aluminum mordant to achieve the wonderful red tone) , and then submerged in a madder bath. The madder would turn the areas treated with the different mordants separate colors. The indigo blue would have been block printed after the fabric was mordant dyed. It appears to have been penciled in places also. The blocks were carved and there would have been a special block produced by a specialist that was responsible for embedding the tiny metal rods for the picotage in this fabric ( the tiny dots). There was another color added that was fugitive and the only tone that remains is a pale beige tone. The ground tone is a lovely natural tone. This textile has a thin silk trim that runs along the bottom of the scallops. The left and right sides have been cut and are not hemmed. The top of this textile appears to have been hemmed in the past, perhaps the trim was removed. There is a light layer of cotton batting between the layers and this textile is lightly quilted. This textile would have been used as the outside pelmet that would have surrounded a 4 poster bed . Lovely for any textile collection.
MEASUREMENTS : This textile measures 51 inches wide by 31 inches long at the longest point of the scallop ~ Condition: This textile is in as found, unwashed condition, with light storage dust. There is light wear along the silk trim and a small hole on the left edge of this textile. There are a few other very small holes in the front fabric of this textile, however it is generally in remarkably good condition for its age. The back has some pale storage marks ~ ~*~* ~** ~*~You will never have to pay any Customs or Duty charges on my textiles posted to an address within the United States, as I have already imported all of my European textiles and have paid any fees for you~*~ My shipping is always fast, so you can expect your purchase to arrive between 1-3 days after payment within the USA~*~ . ~ Please see my other Antique French fabric auctions by ~*~Please see my other items for more textile treasures~*~ ~*~For weekly updates, please add me to your favorites list !~* ~*~Important information~*~ 100% Customer satisfaction is extremely important to me!
