* ** This magnificent 1700s French Marquetry Picture Frame measures 14.5" x 15" and is in very good condition. Naturally with something this early, age is apparent, but nothing distracts from the beauty and character of this fine work in early marquetry. Please feel free to ask questions. We will gladly furnish any information we have and/or more detailed photos. The circular inner frame has a diameter of 7.5" and has a delicate brass molding insert with four very small holes for attaching to the wood frame. The inlay itself is a variety of exotic woods which appear to include a rich burl and satin, the outer frame, walnut, It is the opinion of this dealer that the outer frame may have been added sometime in the late 19th century. In any case, it is just that, just a flat moulding for the early marquetry, and something that certainly maintains the original integrity of the work, itself. The motif of the inlay is of birds, flowers, leaf and vine.This frame still wears, on the back, a paper label, dating 1882, from an Antique Gallery in Philedelphia w it was once sold. This paper label appears to be covering even earlier such labels.
