This is an antique French majolica fruit dish. It depicts a thrush (a bird) in a cherry tree. Just surprised, it begins to fly away. The colours and the scene are somptuous. The leaves display a marvelous greenish blue, some of them being more brown. The feathers present a rich grey, more or less dark. Hundred of little blue spots can be observed on the white background. They give more relief to the plate, deepness and movement. Their density increases from the rim to the center of the plate. They allow to focuse our attention to the leaves and the cherries. A rich effect. The rim displays a rusty brown color. The painting has flowed a little. It seems older with this little default. The plate must have been used in a cherry tree to frighten such voracious birds because it presents 5 hairlines. We can see them at the backside, on the picture. By giving the whole attention to the bird scene, we can discover them in the background and on the bird head. They are partially hidden by the natural craquelé of the enamel and the plate keeps by chance its marvelous beauty. No chips, no discolorations. Such fruit dish is extremely rare. It think it was created during the first part of the 19th century before the increasing of majolica production. The dish measures 9 2/8 inches in diameter and 3 inches deep. It is marked at the back but i didn't recognize this mark. Shipping cost from France to the US : $22,00. Please paypal
