~*~Hello and thank you for looking~*~ Up for auction today is this stunning French antique 19th century Mythological toile ~*~ This print is captivating and so very beautiful~*~ This print is called " La Marchande D' Amour ( The cupid-seller) and the original print was produced in 1817 at the Jouy -en -Josas factory~*~ it is a simply wonderful print. The name La Marchande d'amour is the original title of the design and it was discovered written in pen beside the factory mark. The roller print was engraved by a man named James Mallet at the Jouy en Josas factory~*~ This piece is most likely a mid to late 1800s print of this as I belive the original 1817 print would have only been produced in red, black and probably purple would have followed~*~ Lovely Geometric shapes containing allegorical scenes are set against a background of lozenges embelished at their centres with rosettes. The design was named because of the octagonal cartouche in which a woman is depicted lifting cupids out of the cage. In the wonderful hexagonal medalion, Cupid or Love fins consolation from the ravages of time in the arms of Friendship~*~ it is just wonderful!
