MAGNIFICENT ANTIQUE FRENCH GILT WHITE METAL MANTLE CLOCK AND BAROMETER BY S. MARTI ET CIE
FRANCE LATE 19TH CENTURY A very fine French gilt white metal ( spelter ) mantle clock and barometer is now out for sale. Recently acquired at a private estate sale it is truly a beautiful piece for a mantle or a commode. This clock is absolutely superb, truly nice and appealing; beautifully crafted and embellished with a variety of elements: garlands, ribbons, flowers and foliage. Based after "La Source", a famous bronze by the French 19th Century artist Mathurin MOREAU, it has a semi nude young beauty atop the fountain or source flanked by two fantastic dolphins pouring water and has a clock and a barometer to the sides. The casting is of very good quality with great attention to the details and the dark gold tone patina gives a beautiful bronzed appearance to the entire ensemble. This magnificent time piece is a great piece of art and measures 23 in. ( 58.5 cm. ) height, 15 ¾ in. ( 40 cm. ) width and 7 in. ( 17.5 cm. ) depth and it is IN VERY GOOD CONDITION bearing only the gilt white metal slightly worn in some parts and some general wear commensurate with age as expected for a piece over hundred years old. The clock has porcelain dial with Roman numerals and bevelled glass doors. Having pendulum and key. Eight days time and bell strike movement in working order but needs service to be set. Back plate stamped S. MARTI ET CIE / MEDAILLE DE BRONZE and numbered 6274 4 8. The barometer has a convex glass door at the front and a bevelled glass door at the back. I do not understand the barometer; possibly it works; it seems to be complete, having one hand or needle and reads in red and white characters Stormy - Rain - Change - Fair - Very Dry. We are selling the piece for the general beauty and the clock.
