Vintage, Antique Rosary from a French Nun's estate. The rosary c1850 and it is so beautiful that I will try to put into words what has been the state of the rosary as it stands now. You can tell that the age is pre 1850 or around t as the center medal is upside down, something that was not corrected until the later 1800's. The center medal is the Blessed Virgin Mary standing as She always does in the way that we are use to seeing Her. But if you look closely, t is no saying going around the outer surround of the medal with the saying that the medal was suppose to have which says: O Mary Conceived Without Sin Pray For Us Who Have Recourse To Thee. I have not seen a medal without that until now. Also the stars going around the BVM do number 17 instead of 12 in the other medals, and the medal is not signed, or if it was it is worn off. On the reverse it is interesting to note that the Miraculous Medal is also quite different in that the letter M which stands for Mary has what looks to be tree trunks leading up to the top of the M on both sides and the stars surrounding on the outside total 14 instead of 12 which has been on every other Miraculous Medal. The hearts are hard to see, t are 2 one which is the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with the crown of thorns around the Heart and the other Heart being the BVM's with the saber piercing the Heart. That too is worn. But the crucifix is 2 1/4" by 1 1/4" and has the raised Corpus, and Starburst Nimbus and the raised INRI. The cross is also so worn that Jesus looks like He is melting. The crucifix has the hard metal surrounding the ebony wood center and it is becoming very worn looking on the wood inlay from the many many years of use. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is on the reverse of the cross with the fire above the Heart and the crown of thorns encircling the Heart. The cross has seen better days, but that is what makes an antique so much more enticing and exciting. The length of the rosary is 19 1/4" with a drop of 6 1/2" and a circumference of 25". The beads are wood, a very deep brown and they are worn from many, many years of prayers. The brass Chain is a little rusty, but that can be cleaned up, and it has a little corrosion on it from the years of using it so much, and the environment getting hold of it and aging it naturally. The medals are St. Benedict, with the Latin words on the reverse of the medal for exorcism. Our Lady of Montaigu of Notre Dame, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the back. The next medal is the Blessed Virgin Mary in the center of the medal and t are 12 stars surrounding Her on the medal and the correct saying around the outside of the medal in French. The back has the Miraculous Medal of Mary. The next medal I believe reads: the Blessed Virgin Mary pray for us and have mercy on the faithful. The reverse is the Sacred Heart of Jesus with children at His feet, and it says at the bottom Asia, & Africa on the banner, and this is attributed to the Children of Mary. The last medal is a medal of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Miraculous Medal on the reverse. The Pater beads are hand carved, and I believe that all the beads at one point or another were hand carved each individually. The rosary is one that is full of blessings and tidings to be seen on the blessed rosary and to do a little soul searching as many of the medals are asking for pity, love, understanding, sacrifice, and faithful souls to be given the essential needs and prayers that so many do need and ask for of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mary works through all of us, and asks us all to be so humble to help the people who cannot help themselves. Even if we don't help them with monetary means, we can still pray, and pray for their souls to be made pure and forgiving to Our Lord Jesus Christ through Mary. Everyone who is living and breathing can be praying for all the needs and food, clothing & shelter to help these people who are asking for the understanding of accepting these gifts as given to them by the faithfully departed.
