Rare and wonderful. Made inFrance for Lord & Taylor. Gilded, French porcelain encrier,or inkwell. Also called a pen and ink set. * Beautiful. Hand painted adornments include gold leaf, delicate blue floral motif and slip decoration in the palest of pinks. * Round lid with gilded finial covers opening to well w ink was held. Hole measures 1 1/4 " in diameter. * Diamond shaped lid with gilded finial and slip decoration covers a small compartment that probably held blotting sand. (Not positive. May also have held pen nibs.) Measures 2 3/8 " x 1 7/8 ". * Remaining four holes, for holding pens, vary in size: two are 1/2 ", next is 9/16 " and largest 3/4 ". * Overall measurements 7 1/4 " x 5" wide x 2 1/2 " high (to top of ornamentation). 3 3/4 " high to top of taller lid. * Historical Notes 1. Blotting sand was used on a letter to help dry or blot the ink, to keep it from smearing. They would put some sand on the letter and shake it, then blow the sand off. (Am told blotting sand is still sold in the UK.) 2. Lord & Taylor, a venerable old establishment in NYC, had roots firmly in UPPER crust 19th century society. With commercialization, over time, it has fallen to a respectable position somew above Macy's but below Neiman Marcus. * Condition In fabulous, n early mint condition. No chips, cracks, crazing or repairs. Only very slight read more
