For auction is this delightful and rare French antique quilt dating from about 1790. The design is enchanting with floral meanders in pink, red, and dark blue/purple. It is simply quilted, and the backing is coarse linen. It consists of two similar, but harmonising delicate designs. There is cotton batting. The quilt has issues; structurally it is in excellent condition. However, there has been deterioration of the blue/purple colour, caused by elements in the dye. Therefore, there are overall holes where this colour appears.It is not obvious from a distance - only when viewed closely. Therefore, this quilt would have to be for decoration or very careful use. Optically it is charming and very dainty. The back, incidentally, is excellent without marks or holes. A strong quilt, but the scattered dye defects should be taken into consideration. The quilt is clean and has been carefully washed. The low starting price reflects the damage on this wonderful piece of French history. Measurements: 109" x 74"
