This is a wonderful ANTIQUE, VINTAGE, MUSEUM QUALITY, FUTON COVER, WITH A CRESTED PHOENIX AND DYED PAWLONIA TREE FLOWERS AND BLOSSOMS; RARE AND HARD TO FIND!. . It is an old futon (mattress) cover from the EDO PERIOD which dates from 1603 to 1868. The colors are very subtle and beautiful, pale indigo blue, white and a red-orange, pinks, browns, and soft greys. It measures 60.75 inches tall by 48.5 inches wide. This beautiful futon cover is made of four panels of hand spun woven cotton that has been hand sewn together to make a large rectangle panel. This is the only way authentic old futon covers were made in Japan because the loom widths were narrow, typically 12 to 14 inches wide. The assembled futon cloth was then dyed using a rice paste resist and all natural dyes for the colors. Indigo textiles were the fabric of the countryside of Japan, and they are wonderful examples of Japanese folk art or MINGEI. The condition of the futon cover is good, consistent with age and usage. The cotton fabric is soft and subtle with a mellow fading to the dark indigo color as well as all the colors, indicating it probably has been washed several times over the decades. This extremely attractive and beautiful large textile panel would make a very dramatic wall hanging or table covering. Someone has added dark blue loops on the top ot the futon for easy wall hanging. Just a stunning visual piece a fine Japanese cotton cloth, definitely museum quality!. Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask. Cost for International shipping will be higher.
