This is a one gallon stoneware jug with nice paper label. The label states "Syrup Terebene Comp. No. 50, Alcohol 9%, Each fluid ounce represents Morphine Diacetyl Hydrochloride, 1-8 Gr., Terebene, 16 min., Ipecac, 2-25 gr., Glyceroposhphates Lime and Soda with Aromatics. Dose: One teaspoon every two or three hours. Yates Drug & Chemical Co. , New York." T are some numbers written in pencil at the bottom of the label. This may be a date.

According to Hobart 's 1894 Practical Therapeutics , terebene was used as an expectorant in the treatment of bronchitis. It was made by combining sulfuric acid with oil of turpentine, then distilling.

The typical dosage was to place a few drops on sugar. "Unfortunately," Hobart writes, "terebene is very apt to irritate the stomach." I'll bet. Probably the morphine and alcohol helped ease the treatment.

The jug is 11-½ inches tall with a thick applied handle. T are 2 small chips on the spout. Otherwise, it is in excellent condition. T is a 1-gal crown symbol on the spout side of the jug and the paper label is affixed on the handle side. The jug probably dates from the late 1800s.
