Bought in Paris, France, this 18th Century gentleman's waistcoat is in the poorest condition I have seen to date! However, it is perfect for study. People often ask me how I recognise certain aspects of textiles and it is only by examining them over time. So if you are a beginning collector this is a good start. Also, delightfully, the pocket flaps and below the pockets are still embroidered. Some of the other embroidered edges remain as well, so you have a good idea of how it once looked. Now the waistcoat front would once have been silver thread on a cream silk backing. In the 18th Century, these silver and gold threads were rather precious, and it is said that a hobby grew for many a fine lady to gently and secretly unravel the fine threads from the waistcoats of gentleman when they sat at the theatre! Ladies even had a special little bag to collect the threads in! The most kind description of this waistcoat front is that many ladies stole his silver thread when he wasn't looking!
