This was a possession of my Grandmother's. She had a house full of antiques. This was always on her table, used to hold letters, recipes, and such. Best I can tell, and I'm no an expert, is that it was originally a knife box that was converted to hold letters much later on. It is probably from the 18th or 19th century. It is quite solid with no structural flaws. There are couple spots where the wood is colored different (see photos). I can't explain that. Maybe it is some kind of repair.
