This is a fantastically wild, exuberant antique French Bronze gilt oval jardiniere centerpiece in the late 19th Century Louis XV Rococo style featuring flying doves on each side above foliated cartouches and scrolls, floral sprays and hanging icicles.
A beautiful example of European garniture sculpture and design, two gracefully arcing scroll handles fly outwards from the oval body which rests on four scroll feet, making this large piece even grander. Unmarked, the outside bottom simply bears the cast number "73" in the center. Created of "French Bronze"; a burnished gilt, antiqued bronze covered cast white metal body, this heavy antique vase has a beautiful glow and patina covering it's intricately detailed form, the design of which even extends to the underside, created in case you were to use it on a mirrored plateau on your dining table. Measuring a total of 21 and 1/2 inches in length, this antique metal planter is about 10 inches wide and 6 and 3/4 inches tall. The original oval tin liner is 11 and 3/4 inches long, 6 inches wide and 2 and 1/2 inches tall and has a metal ring handle on each end to remove it from the jardiniere. In fairly good condition for its age with no cracks or dents there is a missing piece from the bottom of one of the flying handles where it returns to meet the body that is about 1 inch long, and there is a small section of the inside inner lip that is missing as photographed that you never see because the liner covers it. The tin liner has several pin holes from corrosion over the years, some larger than others but all less than 1/4 of an inch across and one bottom seam area appears to have been repaired. Although a beautiful burnished antique gold with a sepia wash over it applied here and there, there are traces of gilt paint that must have been from a one-time covering that has since been removed. Overall there is a wonderful, mellow patina of the aged gilt that adds to the grandeur of this remarkably large centerpiece. Perfect to fill with simple white tulips, a pyramid arrangement of lemons or a lavish bouquet, this is a unique and wonderful Atlanta area estate sale find not often seen and probably not to be found again.
