Offered for sale this fine antique circa 1860 -1870 gold, emerald and diamond ring. This unique one of a kind ring features 12 rose cut diamonds, 16 cabochon emeralds and 1 emerald cut center emerald. Each stone is hand set in a completly hand carved 14K gold mounting. Every inch of the mounting is hand cut including the entire shank of the ring- see photos. The emeralds and the rose diamonds are all guaranteed genuine and of the period, the mounting as well is of the period and has been tested and guaranteed to be at least 14K gold. T is no mark of any kind inside the mounting. Estimated total emerald weight is about 2 -2.5 carats. Total ring weight is 8.6 grams of 14K yellow gold . T are tiny white gold leaves at the top of the shank w it meets the body of the ring. Please note that one of the cabochon emeralds appears darker in color and slightly smaller than the 15 others. It appears to be slightly lower in the mounting -but is secure. This may have been replaced many years ago before the ring was brought to the US. The 78 year old owner of this ring remembers purchasing it in Europe in 1950 just after the war - from an antique dealer in France or England. I have seen similar pieces at the NYC Armory Antique show selling for around $2500. No reserve - very low starting bid. Sucessful bidder will pay shipping and insurance - about $15.00 WHAT ARE ROSE CUT DIAMONDS ? - T are 12 Rose Cut Diamonds in this ring. Rose cut diamonds are genuine diamonds. They were introduced as early as the 1500's and were popular until the early 1900's. The shape of a rose cut diamond resembles the petals of a rose bud. The bottom is flat. The crown is domed shaped and the facets meet in a point in the center. The number of facets varies from 3,6,12,18,to 24 facets. What is a cabochon cut ? The method of cutting gemstones with a convex, rounded surface that is polished but unfaceted. Opaque, asteriated, iridescent, opalescent, or chatoyant stones are usually cut en cabochon. The back of a normal cabochon-cut stone is flat, but it may be hollowed to lighten the colour. Emerald, ruby , garnet, jasper, bloodstone, moonstone, cat's-eye, and star ruby and sapphire are among the gemstones usually cut in this manner. Until the 15th century, stones were only polished or the part to be left visible was rounded into a dome shape called cabochon. The cutting known as faceting gradually developed from the first attempts in the 15th century, probably in France and the Netherlands. During the 16th century the simple rose cut began to be used.Best estimate of the size of the ring is size 7.
