Carved 19th Century Goldeneye duck decoy with painted eyes and laminated construction, unsigned. SIZE: The decoy measures 14 inches from bill to tail and 6 and 1/2 inches from base to top of the head. It is 5 and 1/2 inches across at its widest. CONDITION: The duck is in very good condition with some rough spots at the end of the tail, and some shrinkage which reveals the seams where the wood was laminated together, including around the base of the head. The paint is intact except for a very small chip on the beak, a chip or two on the bottom and a barely visible scratch on the back between the wings. The bottom does not have a maker's mark. ABOUT THE DECOY: I am not a decoy expert but this is a pretty piece of folk art. My husband took this decoy to an antiques appraisal session held by Connecticut Public Television. An expert confirmed that this decoy was carved in the 19th century. He said the light paint on the bottom of the decoy may have been reapplied some time ago. Still, the paint looks old and expertly applied. There are brush strokes depicting feathers on stylized wings, red eyes and white patches on the sides of the duck's head near its bill. It is laminated construction with a screw in the bottom. This is a well-made piece of folk art that would look great on any collector's shelf. ShipSaver
