A unique collection of eight hallmarked silver plaques relating to Burton-on-Trent Golf Club in Staffordshire. Seven of the plaques are engraved with the winners of the club's monthly medal each year from 1901 to 1907, giving their names together with gross score, handicap and net score. The eighth plaque states: 'This cup played for monthly since 1898 was kindly replaced by EA Brown Esq in January 1908'. This correlates with the date when the club moved to its present site just across the county border in Derbyshire. Each plaque is 11cm by 5cm and they are all clearly hallmarked for consecutive years, with the maker's mark WHL (William Henry Lyde of Birmingham). Total weight 308 grams. It appears that they were later removed from the plinth of the original cup and have survived in this form. It would not be too difficult to reattach them to a suitable wooden surround, and I am including a bag of the original vintage pins. Among the names on the plaques are: SH Evershed WB Briggs HH Metcalfe C Dickinson S Clegg HS Hincks WS Eadie WK Whigham AP Yule HG Nadin HC Wolfenden TC Jeffrey W Lobb RB Hickman FR Hobbes FW Ascroft G Tanver JF Alexander All of these men can be found in contemporary newspaper reports and some are from well-known local families.
