This is an ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS, antique headboad for a 3/4 size bed~ the width is 48", (46" to the rail slots) and it's almost 6' tall; probably a youth bed in its day. It could possibly be mahogany, but I believe that it's actually rosewood; it's really reddish with an unusual grain...absolutely gorgeous! The three raised sections in the top quadrant are done in a tiny, tight burl; the ornate carving is clearly done by hand. It does have some issues, but I am selling it 'as is' because I believe that in addition to it possibly being rosewood, it may also have it's original finish. T is generalized crackling or crazing, and I just did not want to risk touching it in the event that the finish is original to the piece. The issues are: the burling is raising in places, and missing a couple of small sections on the right side, t has been one cracked panel which was repaired at some time in the past, and one cracked panel that has not been repaired. That said, the headboard most likely straddles the line between late 1800's and early 1900's, is a fine, SOLID piece of work, and truly beautiful. The wood is quite darkened from age on the back, yet the unique color and grain are still apparent. 'As is' for the collector, or re-finished for the do-it-yourselfer, this will be a fantastic addition to anyone's home. Three-quarter size mattresses (otherwise known as "super-singles") are still easily obtainable, as are the linens for them. They are perfect for guest rooms just a LITTLE too small for a full bed, of for that tall, lanky son whose feet hang over a regular single... why sacrifice class, style and elegance simply for the need of an odd-sized bed? ... Now you can have a fantastic headboard to match your great sense of style! Not only that, but an antique well over 100 years old as well! Additional photos show details of the grain and finish; also the point of one raised panel is shown to highlight the fact that it is actually a double raised effect, though somewhat difficult to see in the photo. Please be sure to click on the photos to see the largest view, and if you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me. A note on shipping: This item CAN be shipped, but because of it's size and weight, it will probably have to be shipped freight, and the cost will be in the vicinity of $300; quite possibly more, plus the cost of insurance if the buyer wishes it. I will waive handling on this one. Note: I checked on the shipping of this headboard... IF the top section is removed, and it does come apart, it WILL fit UPS' ground shipping parameters, taking the cost down to the vicinity of somew under $100 I'm guessing... not counting insurance. Also, I'd appreciate any feedback opinions on whether or not this might be rosewood...
