Antique Gunsmith Portrait Painting Captain Joab Hapgood Album Album Album Album Album Album Album Album Album Album Album �� Captain Joab Hapgood (1804-1890) was a Gunsmith and Gun Dealer from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. He was active from the 1840s until after the Civil War and was the first recorded Boston Dealer to advertise Sporting Apparatus. There is a short biography about this Gentleman down below the description. �� Several weeks ago a local auction sold and estate that had items from the Hapgood Family. There were books and several other personal items, but the most important item was the painting that I am listing tonight. Hand Painted on stretched canvas this original Portrait Oil painting depicts Captain Joab Hapgood. The painting measures 25� by 30� and comes in its original 35� by 40� frame. When I first received this painting it was very dirty and there was damage to the paint just to the right of Captain Hapgood�s head. I had this painting professionally cleaned and the damaged paint was in-painted perfectly. There are no other problems or any repairs to this original circa 1860s Portrait Painting. You can see that the Captain has a 5 o�clock shadow, which the artist actually painted. The original frame has its problems but is original. In the close-up photographs you can see some amateur gesso work and the frame was painted gold many years ago. � I am going to let eBay decide what this painting of a Boston Gunsmith is worth and list it without any reserve. You never know what you might find listed without any reserve. �� Biography: After some searching on the net I found a copy of a Circa 1875-80 Original Illustrated Broadside for �J. HAPGOOD GUN STORE BOSTON.� It advertises for "Bird Hunting". J. Hapgood Gun Store was located on 30 Washington Street, Boston, Mass. Mr. Hapgood was a Manufacturer and Dealer in Guns, Rifles, Pistols and a Shooting Tackle Agent for the sale of Volcanic Repeating Arms. Joab Hapgood 1804-1890 was a successful gun manufacturer who started his business in Shrewsbury Massachusetts before moving it to Boston. As a soldier Captain Hapgood fought in the Civil War including the Battle of Gettysburg. While living in Shrewsbury Hapgood held a number of political offices including Selectman, Moderator, Clerk and Assessor. Beside designing and manufacturing guns, Hapgood invented a plow which he used to plant a number of trees on a street later named Maple Avenue. Buried in Shrewsbury, Hapgoods monolith remains the tallest in the town�s Mountain View Cemetery.
