19 TH CENTURY POLYCHROME HAND CARVED CORPUS CHRISTI . This is a wonderful hand carved 19 th century polychrome painted wood 3-dimensional Crucifix Corpus Christi. The Corpus Christi is probably mid-to-late 19 th century. It was carved by a delicate and skilled hand. The detail on the head with the crown of thorns is remarkable. Please note the old nail protruding from the right side of the head. The dimensions of the piece are approximately 20" long by 15 ½" wide and 5 ½" deep. Everything on the Corpus Christi is original. The original polychrome paint is flaking; this is to be expected with a piece of this age. We could not find any indication that it has been touched up. Over time a tiny piece of wood (1"x ½") came off from the back bottom of one of the feet. The area which lost the wood is not visible from the front of the carving. We saved the piece and will include it in shipping. (One of the photos shows the piece.) This is an articulated Corpus Christi. We slipped out one of the arms in order to show the articulation. This is typical of antique carved Corpus Christi. If you look closely at the end of the arm which has been removed for photographic purposes, you will see that originally the articulation was achieved by a carved wooden "plug" which would fit into the shoulder socket.
