Offered for sale is a hand carved figure of a woman's head. I would date this piece to circa 1875. Old world carving which is exquisitely performed by the artist. The figure most likely represents a Roman Goddess or a Greek Goddess. The wood appears to be walnut. The grain is visible only from the back, which you can see in the photos. The front of the piece is shellaced, and he face is painted with the original gold paint. On top of the female head t is a crown, which is also painted gold. Condition: The shellac is very dry as well as the gold leaf paint. T are a few dings to the carving and t, the pictures represent well how it appears in person. This piece was most likely attached to an underside of a architectural capital or was attached to the crown of a piece of Victorian furniture. This is an exceptionally carved piece and would be great displayed as is, or incorporated into a construction rehab. The details in hair and the draped fabric around her bust are very well executed. Measures: 8 ½" long x 5 ¼" wide x 2 ¼" deep. Be sure to view my other listings for other fine quality antiques.
