Antique Indian household shrine from Karnataka. These shrines are placed over or beside doorways in Indian households, probably containing a small bronze or image of Ganesha as the 'remover of obstacles', or other locally appropriate deities. They are made of a solid, dense wood with a beautiful patina and are of varying ages some being very old and some more recent. These interesting items, often called Mandir Altars, are rapidly being replaced by gaudy modern plastic or tin ones. These old wooden shrines are unique and individual, each usually having been handcarved by the householders themselves. This shrine measures 35 (w) x 17 (h) cms and is 5.7 cms deep. For multiple purchases 50p per item is automatically deducted from the shipping cost at checkout. I am happy to post overseas.
